On The Home Front
Next up at Hillgrounds…
Opponent St. Ives Town
Competition Friendly
Last Time They Were Here… Back in 2013, St. Ives won 4-2 at Hillgrounds on their way to the UCL title and promotion.
Did you know… Northern Ireland international forward, Connor Washington, scored more than fifty goals in eighty plus games for the club between 2009 and 2012 before getting his move to Newport County.
Despite claims from its Cornwall namesake, the nursery rhyme/riddle “As I was going to St. Ives”, was written about a person going to the “Great Fayre” in the town.
War poet, Rupert Brooke, once wrote of the town in a poem; “Strong men have blanched and shot their wives, rather than send them to St. Ives”. Obviously a fan of the place.
On this day in Rovers history… Our last fixture on this date was in 2012, when Rovers beat Bedford Town 4-2 at Hillgrounds to claim the Harry Robinson Cup.
This game is your first chance to see the new look Kempston Rovers in action. With Martin Conway, Carl Knox, Robbie Goodman, Ben Shepherd, Ben Acquaye, Alex Collard, Seb Simpson, Ash Fuller, Josh Crawley and Sam Macrae on the retained list so far adding to the arrival of Shane Bush, the squad is beginning to take shape.
The early rounds for the FA competitions were made last week, seeing Rovers paired with local rivals Barton Rovers in the FA Trophy while awaiting the winners of Arlesey and Desborough in the FA Cup. The Southern League fixtures are due for release two days after this game, so keep a check on the club’s social media accounts for news of this.
