Matthew Wilmot rounds up an eventful day in Hertfordshire.
Kempston had to be alert from the off, as Conway was forced into two early saves, firstly from a corner that wasn’t cleared fully and the second from a wickedly curling free kick. Our hosts broke the deadlock on twelve minutes, as Lyon was deemed to have fouled the Royston forward as he entered the box. Scott Bridges dispatched the penalty low to Conway’s left as he went the other way. This sparked Rovers into life, Jake Newman hit the bar after turning his man and shooting from well outside the box, two minutes later, a delicate Luke Heneghan cross was nodded home by returning hero Shane Bush to level the scores. Kempston then pressed forward and had several chances to take the lead before the break, but it was not to be and the two sides went in level.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Royston re-took the lead. Scott Bridges surged into the area and his shot was palmed away, but fell to the feet of Matt Nolan. Nolan tapped the ball home, despite appearing to be in an offside position when the initial shot was taken. Eight minutes later, Royston stretched their lead, when neat interplay saw Nolan again through on goal after some clever physical forward play, he dispatched a low shot past Conway for 3-1.
Rovers were forced into a substitution as Jake Newman had to be withdrawn with a shoulder problem after tangling with Royston sub Kaan Fehmi, who made the most of minimal contact. Newman was cautioned for his trouble into the bargain. With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Kempston caught a lucky break as Joe Welch, the Royston keeper, hit a terrible clearance straight to Heneghan, who squared the ball to Fuller, whos low shot brought the score back to 3-2. Fuller’s fourth goal in four game, had last week not been abandoned it would be five in five for the winger.
Less than two minutes later, Royston thought they had killed the game off as Ryan Ingrey found himself ahead of the defence from a long clearance, to lob the ball neatly over Conway.
As the clock wound down, Rovers found something special. In the eighty ninth minute, a free kick near the Royston box broke down, but Lyon found sub Sam Johnson who seemed to dance past two defenders before curling the ball into the far corner off the post. 4-3. As we entered stoppage time, Johnson found himself free on the wing and put a fantastic cross over for Robbie Goodman, who saw his header cleared off the line for a corner. It was from this corner that Ash Fuller found the head of Seb Simpson, who headed down and in to spark wild scenes among the travelling fans. The goal proved to be the last action of the game, as the referee blew for time at the re-start.
