It all came down to this, Rovers were looking to continue their six year stay in the Southern League as the newly introduced 'inter-step relegation playoff' was introduced, Rovers hosting Eccleshill Utd who finished as one of the best six runners up in Step 5.
Two changes were made from last week's defeat to Waltham Abbey, Stratton and McShane absent with Cooper and Johnson returning to the XI. Hayford started in a deeper role next to Dahie in midfield, with Baker and Charles playing out wide and Wielblad just behind Johnson up top.
The visitors started the brighter of the two teams, showing lots of energy (and corners) early on, with Ringer making a good reaction to a header from one of the set pieces, as well as a great last-ditch block from Ronayne.
As the game went on the Walnuts grew into it, and had a great chance to open the scoring 15 minutes in, Johnson was put through and opted to square the ball but his pass evaded Baker.
Rovers were then gifted a huge opportunity to take the lead from the spot as Baker's cross was handled by an Eccleshill defender. Captain Hayford stepped up for Kempston but his penalty was saved, thankfully the rebound fell kindly to the number 4 to slot home.
Into the second half and once again the visitors started brighter, however this time their pressure showed. Rovers initially defended a corner (yes another one) well, but lost possession on the edge of the box where Bradley curled into the far corner to equalise.
Just five minutes later and the Eagles had turned it around, Cissa cutting in from the right and his effort found the net via the far post.
After Kempston had settled down they then equalised on 68 minutes, Baker being put through at an angle and another goal was scored via the woodwork.
There were no further goals so extra time came about, the first 15 minutes Kempston had to thank Ringer in net for a string of excellent saves. The second 15 had more pressure from Rovers, Charles with a couple of chances and Johnson with the best with just a minute to go, but his shot went over.
Onto the dreaded penalty kicks, all were scored until the fifth where Ronayne struck the crossbar for Kempston. Thankfully this didn't prove costly as Sangster's penalty, the fourth for the Eagles was saved by Ringer. Sudden death commenced and after three more successful penalties, it was Ringer the hero again as he saved Cissa's.
A thoroughly entertaining match where either side could have won, however it is Kempston who retain their Step 4 status for another year. Commiserations to Eccleshill who played their part and will be looking to go one better next year.
All at KRFC would like to thank everyone for their support over a difficult nine months, we are glad there is something to smile about and everyone involved will be looking to push the Walnuts away from relegation worries in 2022/23.
Our end of season presentation night takes place on Saturday 7th May, starting at 19:00. This is free entry to all, we hope to see you there as we present awards to the first team, reserves and ladies.
