The Walnut Boys endured a night to forget as two former favourites did the damange

Barton Rovers convincingly won this A6 Derby clash by four goals to one on a night that home fans will want to forget.

The game sprang into life after eight minutes, former Kempston favourite Nathan Tshikuna playing a ball through to another ex Walnut Boy, Dean Dummett. Dummett was allowed to maraud forward, check inside and launch a stunning strike into the top corner of the net from outside the box, to open the scoring. Jordan Wright needed to be lively to clear from under his own crossbar as a Barton free kick whipped in. Kempston’s best chance of the half came midway through the proceedings. Neat interplay on the left hand side between Finlay Brennan and Gareth Hunt saw Brennan bearing down on goal but Forster had strong enough wrists to beat away the youngster’s effort. Gittens then tested Carl Knox’ reflexes from close range as Barton continued to look a danger on the counter attack. Late in the half, Harry Stratton blazed wildly wide after being played in by Izale McLeod. But it was in first half stoppage time that we got a taste of the way the game was going to go after the break. The referee twice delayed a corner being taken to speak with players standing their ground in the middle of the box. The result was two needless yellow cards, one for Kempston’s McLeod and one for Barton’s Forster. Barton took their single goal lead into the break.

Kempston were forced into two changes at the beginning of the second period, one of the substitutes, Jake Newman had a snap shot comfortably held at the second attempt by Forster, but a lightening breakaway sent Osobu clear on the Barton left, his cross was turned in by the unlucky Finlay Brennan at the far post for an own goal and two nil. Kempston had a half chance from a free kick as Evan Beldon flicked goalwards. Midway through the second half, Williams burst forward for Barton into the box where he went down in what appeared to be a tangle with Jordan Wright. Contact between the two players seemed minimal, but a penalty was given to howls of derision from the terraces. Former Kempston man Nathan Tshikuna tidily put the spot kick away for three nil. In the wake of the penalty, the game became fractious, with both sides discontent with the referee’s performance. A ninetieth minute counter attack saw Barton score a fourth through McKenzie-Lowe. Kempston were gifted the chance to have the last laugh however, Jake Newman went to ground in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot again, despite both sets of fans being disgusted with the decision. Izale McLeod netted his fourth goal in two games from the spot, but the damage had already been done for Kempston.

Defeat drops Kempston down to tenth place. There is a break from league action this weekend as Rovers travel to Hornchurch on the fringes of London in the FA Cup. Next Tuesday, cup replays allowing, Kempston will host St. Neots for the second time in three weeks, this time in the league cup.
