Kempston started brightly and were nearly ahead after twelve minutes, Robbie Goodman pulled the ball across goal and Jamaine Ivy, stretching, just couldn’t reach to turn it in. Rovers did not have to wait too much longer to open the scoring, however, as shortly after the quarter hour mark Ben Shepherd put a delicious low cross through the six yard area for a sliding Ash Fuller to bundle into the net. It was Fuller’s eleventh goal of the season and fortieth over all for Kempston. Our hosts were limited to long shots and half chances in the first half, only once forcing keeper Carl Knox into serious action, at the half hour point, to parry a long and slightly wind assisted free kick wide. Aylesbury did have a golden chance to level the scores before the break, winger Bruno Brito volleying wide of a gaping goal.
The second half started slowly as the wind became more of a factor in the game. Again, Aylesbury had a good chance to level the scores when a long ball from the back bounced through, only for forward Sonny French to screw his shot wide when it seemed harder to miss. Kempston made their changes as the game progressed, Munashe Sundire coming on for Lyon, Luke Heneghan replaced Boland and new signing Jake Newman was brought into the fray for his Rovers debut in place of Ivy. With fifteen minutes to go, one of the substitutes, Heneghan received the ball after a poor clearance and rocketed a shot into the top corner of the net from fully twenty yards. Not a bad way to open your goal scoring account for the club. Kempston did have chances to add a gloss to the score line as the game wound down, but the points were safe and the small band of travelling fans went home happy as Rovers picked up their first league win in nine attempts.
The win keeps Rovers in sixth place, now just two points off the play-off places with a game in hand on the side immediately above them.
