Kempston’s match against Chalfont St Peter was abandoned in stoppage time with Rovers being 2-1 down and down to ten men at Mill Meadow due to a serious injury sustained by Chalfont center half Adam Kirby.

Our hosts had started the better of the two teams and were ahead after seventeen minutes, when a corner from the right was headed in unmarked by Kirby. The lead, however, was short lived as three minutes later Kempston broke and Jake Newman was pushed to the ground by Kirby for a clear penalty, which Ash Fuller drove home into the bottom right corner.
Both sides had further chances in the first half, but it remained level at the break.
Twelve minutes into the second half, our hosts re-took the lead. A deep cross from full back Gary Burrell was nodded back across goal to Mendy, who headed up rather than toward goal. In the ensuing bundle as the ball came back down, it appeared that Mendy got the last touch as the ball went in. Martin Conway appeared to have been blocked in his attempt to reach the dropping ball, but neither he nor his team mates protested.
As Kempston pressed forward for their second leveller of the game, there were chances at both ends as our hosts made the most of the counter attack. As time wound down, Ben Shepherd received a second yellow card for hitting the ground after not getting a decision from the referee. The act was deemed as aggressive conduct.
The entire game was then over shadowed by what happened next, with Kempston attacking, Chalfont center half Kirby seemed to land awkwardly from a headed challenge. He did get back to his feet, but went down again holding his chest. It was very clear that something serious had happened as players and medical personal rushed to help. Kirby received treatment on the pitch for over an hour as both a first responder and an ambulance arrived to assist. From the information I was given, it seems that Kirby had injured his neck and was struggling to move it, winding himself in the process. On advice from the FA, the referee officially abandoned the game at eight minutes to six.
Obviously, our best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to Adam Kirby and Chalfont St Peter. Praise must also go to our physio Andy Whyte for his efforts in the absence of the home physio on the day. The league will, in due course, announce a new date for the fixture.
