Kempston Rovers moved back into the play off places this afternoon as they dispatched a spirited Fleet Town by three goals to one in the Spring Sunshine.

As in recent weeks, Rovers got the bit between their teeth from the start and nearly found an early goal. Jake Newman crossed for Sam Johnson to volley, his effort was saved for a corner. Kempston did manage to hit the front on the quarter hour mark, a beautiful through ball from Boland found Ben Shepherd surging through. The midfielder calmly turned the defender before slotting the ball low and across into the far corner. The lead was almost immediately doubled as Newman crossed for Goodman to head on goal. Visiting keeper Ryan Pryce was equal to the task and saved the effort. The bumper crowd were largely quieted on the twenty minute mark as Fleet winger Rob Carr latched on to a long ball over the top and lobbed a delicate finish over Carl Knox into the net to level the scores. Just before half time, Kempston could’ve gone back in front without taking a shot as a Jake Newman cross was unfortunately sliced toward goal by a defender, however the keeper was alert enough to spare his blushes and the two sides went in level at the break.
Rovers made a change at the break to bring on Jamaine Ivy and slightly alter the shape. A decision that was rewarded almost straight away. Sam Johnson, now in a wider position, received the ball on the edge of the area and, after battling with the defender for some room, curled a shot beyond the desperate grasp of the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net. Fleet were fortunate not to fall further behind in the fiftieth minute when the ball was played back to their goalkeeper, who tried to return the pass, which was almost intercepted by Sam Johnson with what would’ve been an open goal to tap into. Two minutes later, Fleet captain Ben White saw a free kick tipped over the bar by Knox. With five minutes to go, White tried to get the scores level all by himself. He managed to surge past two defenders and into the area before eventually seeing his effort blocked before it could trouble the keeper. Rovers sealed the win with two minutes left on the clock. Heneghan, Ivy and Fuller exchanged some neat passes and contrived to find Newman in the box, he turned his man and unleashed a low shot into the net for three one.
The result has lifted Rovers into the play off places with two games of the season to go. All of which makes Bank Holiday Monday at Barton Rovers all the more important.
