Kempston Rovers rounded off their season in style in the spring sunshine at Hillgrounds on Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 win over relegated Histon. It wasn’t quite enough to lift Rovers into the play off spots as they fell a point short.

Rovers took the lead as early as the sixth minute when Sam Johnson put Jake Newman through on goal. The forward had the run of the entire Histon half as they had stepped up for offside, Newman bore down on goal and finished tidily to open the scoring. Kempston very nearly gave away their advantage soon after, as Grant Fryer under-hit a back pass, leading to a scramble and an eventual clearance from Alex Stoyles. On the quarter hour, a free kick in from Johnson was met with a bullet header from Robbie Goodman, which the Histon keeper was at full stretch to tip over the bar. Rovers did not have to wait much longer to double their lead, a curling shot from Ben Shepherd found the net via the far post on twenty minutes. Histon created a couple of half chances toward the end of the half, but little to trouble Carl Knox in goal. Rovers led two nil at the break, but news from elsewhere was not favourable for a play off place.
Kempston had extended their lead within ten minutes of the re-start, Jake Newman heading powerfully in to the net for his second of the game and seventh since joining the club in February. This seemed to spark Histon into life as they hit back two minutes later, forward Tommy Wright bringing down a cross and expertly flicking the ball past Knox and giving the visiting fans something to celebrate in what has been a difficult season for them. With fifteen minutes left, Rovers wrapped the game up completely; the superb Jake Newman put the ball across goal for sub Ash Fuller to nod home his seventeenth goal of the season. With news filtering through from Egham that they had doubled their lead against Barton, effectively ending Kempston’s play off dream, the match petered out as a spectacle, four one the final score. Rovers finished the season a creditable sixth in the table.
After the match, joint Manager Jimmy Stoyles spoke candidly; “It’s been a great season, yes we’re disappointed, but at the start if you’d have offered us sixth place with seventy three points, we’d have said yes. We’ve got to credit everyone connected with the club for this season, the volunteers, the committee, hopefully we can keep this group of players together and go one better next year.”
