Kempston Rovers crashed to their heaviest home league defeat since March 2014 at the hands of Thame United.

A furious Jimmy Stoyles refused to name a man of the match at the end of game as Rovers were roundly beaten on a cold winter’s night at Hillgrounds.

The Oxfordshire side were worthy winners and wasted no time at all in getting themselves in front. An unfortunate ricochet on a clearance by Jordan Lee cannoned off Alex Stoyles and straight into the path of a Thame attacker, who played in Dan West to gently lift the ball over the advancing Martin Conway in the home goal after only two minutes play. A matter of moments later, Rovers should’ve been level, Hill in the Thame goal failed to claim a free kick and when the ball fell kindly for Nathan Tshikuna, the winger somehow contrived to hit the bar from inside the six yard box. Sam Johnson had to be withdrawn on the half hour for the hosts as he couldn’t shake off the after effects of an earlier robust challenge. Tshikuna had a couple of long range efforts and Kyal McNulty had a shot wide as the half wore on. West went into the book for the visitors after a questionable lunge on Ben Shepherd. Michael Lyon also got a card from the referee for a late challenge on West.

Just as quickly as they scored in the first half, Thame doubled their lead in the second. A free kick was played into the box and a strong header from Hercules found the corner of the net. Before the hour mark, Kempston were three down as a cross was played into the box from the right hand side and not cleared properly. Harry Mepham capitalised and slammed home from close range. Five minutes later, a curious passage of play ended with Jordan Lee in the referee’s note book, the full back was clearly barged to the floor when going for the ball by Goss, he recovered his feet and mistimed a challenge on the Thame man. Ben Shepherd hit a free kick just wide for Rovers on seventy minutes before he was subbed off. With fifteen minutes to go, Seb Simpson had a header from a corner cleared off the line. Two minutes later, Thame wrapped the game up with a left wing cross landing perfectly on the unmarked head of sub Jamie Essex. As the clock wound down, sub Josh Crawley brilliantly turned his man, flicking it above his head on the turn before shooting wide.

Defeat sees Rovers in ninth place in the table ahead of this Saturday’s final game before Christmas at home to Moneyfields. This game is followed by the Supporters Club race night in the bar, all are welcome for the seven o’clock start.
