The high-flying visitors laid down a marker in their quest for the play-offs this season as they clinically dispatched Rovers. City, playing at their lowest level in a considerable number of years, have retained most of their squad from the Southern Premier last year and with some additions, look to be a very good side. With a new ground on the horizon, a bright future is coming in to view.
City were ahead as early as the third minute, a cross was played into the area from the right hand side and Jack Vasey was on hand to head in off the underside of the bar with Martin Conway well beaten. Vasey ended his contribution to the game shortly afterwards, replaced by Relizani. On twenty minutes the lead was doubled, another right hand cross from full back Robinson was played high into the area, Conway came and didn’t get the ball, leaving Sharman to head into the empty net for two nil. Luke Heneghan stung the palms of Bannister in the City goal with Rovers first effort on target before Robinson effectively ended the game before half time. The City full back capitalised on a poor clearance to cut inside his man and curl the ball in off the far post past a diving Conway for three nil. The half time score didn’t flatter the visitors at all, as they looked to be a very strong and well organised young team.
The second half started with a Nathan Tshikuna shot over the bar as Rovers looked to try and salvage something from the match. Kempston managed to retain the ball for longer periods in the second half and played some neat football, but couldn’t find a way to unlock a stubborn City back line. Midway through the second period, City midfielder Towner seized on a sloppy pass in middle of the park and broke through on goal. He kept composure under pressure from the recovering Rovers back line to hit the target with a looping finish for four nil. Moments later, Bannister in the City goal produced the save of the match to deny Luke Heneghan with a one-handed parry as the Rovers man thought he had found the top corner from the edge of the box. Cambridge could have scored a fifth as Relezani hit the cross bar with a powerful effort. Late in the game, Seb Simpson and Josh Crawley combined in the box from a free kick, but they couldn’t force the ball home. The game dropped in pace as City realised their job was done. Four nil was the final score, Cambridge worthy winners and looking very strong.
Kempston stay in ninth position after the fixture, but have now played more games than most of the sides around them in the table. Next up is a trip to face Egham Town on Saturday. Egham were due to play this evening, but were postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, with more rain forecast in London this week, it may be a similar case at the weekend for ourselves.
