Pedigree Rovers bite back from two down to win a thriller

Kempston came out winners of this Bedfordshire Derby clash after a thrilling fightback from two nil down to warm up a very cold afternoon.

The visitors were quickest out of the traps, former Rovers hero Josh Crawley made a nuisance of himself from a bouncing ball and made sure his former team mates couldn’t deal with it, allowing Burnett to tap home the loose ball and open the scoring after just five minutes. Moments later, Fry saw a snap shot saved by Carl Knox as it looked like Rovers were in for a long afternoon. Having weathered the early spell, Kempston sniffed out a chance of their own, Emmanuel Dahie firing wide from an optimistic long shot. the rest of the first half was very much for the purists, as neither side could create much going forward until just before the break. The livewire Ben Baker combined well down the right with Max Marsh, but the winger could only fire over. Dunstable deservedly went in ahead at the interval.

In the early throws of the second half, visiting forward BJ Christie, so often the scurge of Rovers in the past few seasons, found himself in the doghouse with the referee, receiving a caution for dissent. Ben Baker then had a magnificent chance to level the game, but dragged his shot wide of the far post. Kempston were made to pay for their wasteful finishing as the visitors doubled their advantage in the simplest of fashions. A corner from the right was met by Ryan Frater, who’s bulldog header found the net for two nil with half an hour to play. Less than five minutes later, it should’ve been curtains for Rovers. Christie was put through on the break, clipping the ball beyond Carl Knox, he could only find the woodwork. The let off spurred Kempston on and midway through the half, they got their reward. Harry Stratton laid the ball into the path of Jake Newman and the arch-predator slipped the ball in to halve the deficit and get Kempston tails wagging. In the aftermath of the goal, Rovers made a double change, bringing Gareth Hunt and Kerran Birch into the game. Dunstable began to try and manage the game and close out the win, but were un done with just over ten minutes to play. Stefan Bailey played the ball into Hunt on the edge of the box, Hunt in turn fed Ben Baker. The winger drove into to the box and lashed the ball into the far top corner of the net to level the game. Sensing something special in progress, the volume from the terraces lifted to match the Rovers players energy. Sensing blood, Kempston poured forward. Baker cutting back a cross under heavy, possibly foul, pressure to find Jake Newman in the box, his shot was smothered by a grateful Dan Green. With five minutes left on the clock, the comeback was complete. Birch found room on the left to cross in to the box, finding Newman free in the six yard area to nod home and send the home crowd into raptures. As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Dunstable keeper Dan Green came up for a corner, Jake Newman hacked it clear from the area, being fouled in the process. Perhaps frustrated that they hadn’t closed out the game from a comfortable position, Dunstable tempers boiled over and a mass confrontation ensued. Despite punches appearing to be thrown, the referee only saw fit to award a yellow card to visiting full back Abraham and also to Newman who had been laying on the floor waiting for medical treatment while the whole incident took place. Kempston held out the remaining minutes of stoppage time for a magnificent victory, proving that every dog has its day.

The victory lifts Rovers one place up to seventeenth and changes the form sheet from one win in fourteen to two wins in four ahead of another home game next weekend against Aylesbury United.
