After the excitement of Saturday’s original encounter, the replay took a while to warm up. The Swans had two early half chances in first ten minutes, one deflected over the bar and one tamely into the arms of Conway. But it was Rovers that made the breakthrough in the eighteenth minute, a long ball through to Newman who beat the offside trap. Newman showed great composure to round the keeper and slide a finish into the empty net for the opening goal. The cheers had barely died down when Kempston doubled the lead. Callum Lewis surged down the left hand side, beat his man all ends up and squared for Newman, who took an extra touch to compose his finish and score his, and Kempston’s, second goal. Two minutes before the break, the ball fell to Newman who had a shot blocked wide for a corner. The corner swung in toward the back post, Robbie Goodman rose above his marker to head the ball back across goal and Newman was there to nod the ball goalwards for his hat-trick. Jake becomes the first player to net a treble for Rovers since Shane Bush in December 2015 against Kirby Muxloe. Rovers could’ve made it four in first half stoppage time, but Ash Fuller’s effort was comfortably saved by the Swans keeper.
After a very stern dressing down at the break, the visitors didn’t start the second half any better. Early chances for Fuller and Sam Johnson could have extended the lead. The best chance of the second half came just after the hour mark when Rovers cleverly worked a free kick which resulting in the ball being rolled across goal about eight yards out only for Robbie Goodman to completely miss his kick. Two minutes later, Newport Pagnell got their lifeline. A clipped cross from sub Chris Wreh was brought down by Fazal Koriya before he volleyed it into the top of the net. Rovers restored their three goal cushion with five minutes to play. Nathan Tshikuna, on as a sub, fed the ball into fellow sub George Boland who drove forward, played a one two with Jake Newman, and found himself clear through on the keeper and finished low into the opposite corner for his first goal in Rovers colours. Grant Fryer got himself a yellow card late on, but that couldn’t take the gloss off the performance.
Rovers now face Wisbech Town at home in the First Qualifying round of the FA Cup at the beginning of September after the Bank Holiday double header with Uxbridge and Rushden & Diamonds.
